Darjeeling is one of India’s most timeless travel experiences — a place where history, nature, and atmosphere combine in a way that is uniquely its own. The crisp mountain air that smells of pine and fresh tea. The pre-dawn darkness before the Tiger Hill sunrise, when the whole of the Himalayan horizon erupts in gold. The wheezing joy of the Toy Train negotiating improbable bends through tea gardens and mountain villages. The quiet of a Tibetan monastery at evening prayer.
Our Darjeeling Escape — 4 Nights 5 Days — is a concise but deeply rewarding North East India package designed for travellers who want to experience Darjeeling’s greatest moments without rushing. Watch Kangchenjunga glow at sunrise from Tiger Hill. Walk through the misty rows of Happy Valley tea estate and taste the world’s most prized teas. Ride the UNESCO-listed Toy Train around Batasia Loop with panoramic snow peak views. Visit the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute founded by Tenzing Norgay. See a red panda at close range.
This Darjeeling short tour package is ideal for a long weekend getaway from Kolkata, a quick escape from Delhi or Mumbai, or as the opening chapter of a longer Northeast India journey.
Arrive at Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri Station and transfer to Darjeeling by road through tea estates and Himalayan foothills (approx. 3.5–4 hrs). As you ascend, watch the plains give way to pine forests, the air turns cool and crisp, and Darjeeling's familiar hillside cityscape comes into view. Check in to your hotel. Evening walk on Mall Road — Darjeeling's elegant promenade with views of the Himalayan peaks at dusk. Overnight in Darjeeling.
Rise at 3:30 AM and drive to Tiger Hill (2,590 m). As the sun rises over the Himalayan horizon, Kangchenjunga (the world's third-highest peak) glows in shades of orange, red, and gold. On clear days, Mount Everest and Makalu are visible. Return for breakfast and then explore Darjeeling: the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (founded by Tenzing Norgay), the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park — home to the charming red panda, snow leopard, and Himalayan wolf — and the Japanese Peace Pagoda. Overnight in Darjeeling.
Morning visit to Happy Valley Tea Estate or Makaibari Tea Garden — walk through the rows of tea bushes as the mountain mist hangs low, watch the leaves being plucked, tour the processing facility, and finish with a curated tasting session of Darjeeling's famous first-flush, second-flush, and muscatel teas. Afternoon: board the UNESCO-listed Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Toy Train for its famous heritage joyride through Batasia Loop, the spiral track with panoramic Kangchenjunga views, stopping at Ghum — the highest railway station in India. Overnight in Darjeeling.
Drive to Mirik (1.5 hrs) — a serene hill town with a turquoise lake (Sumendu), strawberry farms, and orange orchards. Enjoy a boat ride on the lake and walk across the suspension bridge through the cardamom gardens. Return to Darjeeling and spend the late afternoon on the Monastery Trail — visiting the Yiga Choeling Monastery at Ghum (the oldest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Darjeeling) and the Darjeeling Dali Monastery. Browse Mall Road for wooden curios, hand-knitted woollens, and premium Darjeeling teas to carry home. Overnight in Darjeeling.
After breakfast, check out and transfer to Bagdogra Airport or NJP Station. As the mountains recede in your rear-view mirror and the plains spread out ahead, you'll already find yourself calculating when you can return to Darjeeling. Some places do that to you.
October to December (post-monsoon, crystal clear mountain views) and March to May (spring, rhododendrons blooming, pleasant weather) are the best times to visit Darjeeling. January and February are cold but offer stunning snow-dusted mountain views. Avoid June to September (heavy monsoon, landslides, poor visibility).
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (Toy Train) runs scheduled services and joyrides. Our itinerary includes the heritage joyride (Darjeeling to Ghum via Batasia Loop — approx. 2 hrs). A longer full-day journey from Darjeeling to Kurseong can be arranged as an add-on. The toy train experience is always subject to operational schedules.
Yes, Darjeeling is ideal for families — it's safe, compact, has excellent hotels, great food, and activities like the Toy Train, red panda zoo, and tea estate visits are loved by children. The Tiger Hill sunrise is suitable for kids (they often find it even more magical than adults). We can arrange family-friendly rooms and activities throughout.
